Why Fairway Estates Residents Visit Central DuPage Chiropractic

Golf is a significant part of life for many Fairway Estates residents. The rotational demands of the golf swing are not gentle on the lumbar spine. Players who golf two, three, or four times per week through the season accumulate real mechanical stress in the lumbar facet joints, sacroiliac joint, and thoracic spine. The tightening you feel on the back nine is your body telling you those joints have had enough for one round.

The homes in Fairway Estates were built largely in the 1970s and 1980s, with some newer construction sprinkled through the area. Regardless of when they were built, the lots are sizable. Mowing, edging, trimming, and managing mature landscaping are ongoing physical demands that layer on top of an active golf schedule.

Naperville Road and Butterfield Road are the main arteries for Fairway Estates commuters heading toward I-88 or downtown Naperville. The drive is manageable but adds daily lumbar compression that compounds through the week. By Friday, many residents notice their lower back is tighter than it was Monday.

What brings Fairway Estates residents through our door most often?

  • Lower back and sacroiliac pain from golf rotation, especially in the late season
  • Hip stiffness and hip flexor tightness after multiple rounds per week
  • Mid-back and rib pain from the thoracic rotation demands of the golf swing
  • Sciatica from driving commutes on Butterfield Road and I-88
  • Lower back strain from lawn and landscape maintenance on large lots
  • Shoulder pain in golfers and homeowners from repetitive overhead work

The patients from Fairway Estates tend to know their bodies well. They come in when something is off, and they respond quickly to care because they stay active and healthy between visits.

Back Pain, Hip Pain & Golf Injury Treatment

Golfer's lower back is one of the most common presentations in chiropractic practice. The lumbar facet joints take the brunt of the swing's rotational forces with each shot. Over the course of a round, and over the course of a season, those joints accumulate restriction that eventually produces pain, stiffness, and the hip locking that many golfers describe. Correcting those joints directly is what allows the muscles to finally relax.

Research from the American College of Physicians identifies spinal manipulation as a recommended first-line treatment for acute and chronic low back pain before medication or surgery.1

Hip mobility problems in golfers often trace back to the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joint rather than the hip joint itself. When Dr. Carlo corrects the lumbar and SI mechanics, hip range of motion typically improves as well. Many golfers are surprised to find their swing feels different after the first few visits.

Commuter sciatica from Butterfield Road and I-88 is another pattern we see consistently from this neighborhood. Flexion-distraction technique decompresses the affected nerve root effectively and provides relief faster than most patients expect.

Chiropractic Adjustments & Techniques

A chiropractic adjustment restores proper movement to a spinal joint that has shifted out of alignment. When a joint stops moving correctly, it puts pressure on the surrounding nerves and discs. Correcting the joint removes that pressure and allows the body to begin healing the tissue around it.

Dr. Carlo uses two primary adjustment techniques and selects the one that fits your condition and comfort level:

  • Diversified technique: a precise, hands-on manual adjustment that restores joint motion. The most widely used method in chiropractic practice and the one that produces the familiar audible pop.
  • Flexion-distraction: a slow, rhythmic decompression technique performed on a specialized table. Particularly effective for disc herniations, sciatica, and the lumbar facet irritation common in golfers and active homeowners.

Dr. Carlo explains his approach and answers your questions before any treatment begins. Learn more about chiropractic adjustments at our Wheaton office.

What to Expect During Your Care Plan

  1. Visit 1: Full health history review, orthopedic and neurological examination, discussion of findings, and a care plan recommendation. Treatment may begin at this visit if appropriate.
  2. Weeks 1 to 3: Most patients come in 2 to 3 times per week. The goal is to reduce inflammation, restore joint motion, and begin correcting the underlying mechanical problem.
  3. Weeks 4 to 8: Visit frequency typically decreases to once or twice per week as the condition stabilizes. Rehabilitation exercises are introduced to reinforce improvement.
  4. Maintenance: Once the condition is resolved, many golfers and active homeowners continue with monthly or bi-monthly visits to keep the lumbar spine and hips moving freely through the full golf season and beyond.

What Our Patients Are Saying

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is your office from Fairway Estates in south Wheaton?

From Fairway Estates, the drive north to our office at 400 W Liberty Dr is about eight minutes. Head north on Naperville Road, turn left on Liberty Drive, and we are on the right side of the street. Free parking is available at the building with no time limits.

I golf several times a week near Cantigny and my lower back tightens on the back nine. What is causing that?

The golf swing creates significant rotational force through the lumbar facet joints and sacroiliac joint. As those joints fatigue through the round, the muscles around them contract to stabilize what the joints can no longer control. That is the tightening you feel. A chiropractic evaluation identifies which segments are restricted and gets them moving freely so the muscles do not have to overwork. Most golfers notice a real difference within a few visits.

My hip locks up after my morning round at the golf course near Fairway Estates. Is that related to my back?

Often yes. The hip and lumbar spine share function during rotation. When the lower back is restricted, the hip compensates, and what feels like a hip problem is frequently a combined lumbar and sacroiliac restriction. Dr. Carlo evaluates both the hip and the spine together, which is why many golfers from this neighborhood see improvement in hip mobility after lumbar care without ever treating the hip directly.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on your condition, how long it has been present, and how your body responds to care. Acute pain from a specific activity often improves significantly within 6 to 8 visits over two to three weeks. Chronic conditions that have been building for months typically require 12 to 20 visits over 8 to 12 weeks. Dr. Carlo gives every patient a specific estimate after the first examination and adjusts the plan as you improve.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor in Illinois?

No referral is needed. Call us at (630) 665-7266 or book online at any time. Illinois allows patients to see a chiropractor directly without a physician referral. If Dr. Carlo finds something during your examination that needs evaluation by another specialist, he will let you know and help coordinate the right referral.
