Chiropractor Near Downtown Wheaton, IL

Board Certified Chiropractic Physician Member, American Chiropractic Association Member, Illinois Chiropractic Society 20+ Years Serving DuPage County

If you work or live near the intersection of Main Street and Front Street in Downtown Wheaton, our office is just minutes away on Liberty Drive. Central DuPage Chiropractic & Rehabilitation has been a part of this community since 2005, and a good number of our patients walk in from the Metra station or stop by after work on their way home from the Wheaton business district.

Commuting takes a toll. Sitting on the train, hunching over a laptop, and driving back and forth on the Eisenhower can all contribute to chronic neck tension and low back pain. Does that sound familiar? If so, Dr. Carlo can help you figure out what is causing it and put a plan together to fix it.

Back & Neck Pain Treatment

Downtown Wheaton attracts a lot of desk workers and daily commuters. Long hours in a chair, extended time on the train, and hours behind the wheel create the conditions for cervical tension and lumbar strain. Research from the American College of Physicians identifies spinal manipulation as a recommended first-line treatment for acute and chronic low back pain, before medication or surgery are considered.1

When spinal joints shift out of alignment, they compress the nerves and soft tissue around them. That compression is what produces the aching, stiffness, or shooting pain you feel. A chiropractic adjustment restores proper joint position, removes that pressure, and gives your body the space it needs to heal. How quickly you improve depends on how long the problem has been developing and how consistently you come in for care.

For most patients with acute back or neck pain, meaningful relief typically begins within the first 4 to 6 visits. Chronic conditions that have been building for three months or more usually require 8 to 12 weeks of consistent care to establish lasting improvement. Dr. Carlo will give you a realistic estimate at your first visit based on what he finds in your examination.

Headache & Migraine Treatment

Tension headaches are extremely common in people who spend long hours at a desk or commuting. Many do not realize the headaches are coming from their neck.

The upper cervical spine, just below the base of the skull, can refer pain directly into the head when its joints are restricted or misaligned. The International Headache Society classifies this as a cervicogenic headache (IHS code 11.2.1), a distinct condition in which the source of head pain is a structural problem in the cervical spine, not a brain or vascular issue.2 Clinical research supports spinal manipulation as an effective treatment for cervicogenic headaches, with studies showing significant reductions in both frequency and intensity compared to medication alone.3

Dr. Carlo targets the C1 through C3 vertebral levels, where cervicogenic headache most commonly originates. Most patients begin noticing fewer headaches within the first 4 to 6 visits. Significant, lasting improvement typically develops over 6 to 10 weeks of consistent care. Patients who have been relying on over-the-counter medication daily often find they can reduce or stop that habit once the cervical mechanics driving the headaches are corrected.

Chiropractic Adjustments

A chiropractic adjustment is a specific, controlled force applied to a spinal joint that has lost its proper position or range of motion. The goal is to restore normal mechanics to the joint so it can move freely without irritating the surrounding disc, nerve, or muscle tissue.

Dr. Carlo primarily uses two adjustment techniques, and selects the one that fits each patient's condition, health history, and comfort level:

  • Diversified technique — the most widely used hands-on method, involving a precise manual thrust to restore joint motion. This is the technique that produces the familiar audible pop.
  • Flexion-distraction — a slow, rhythmic decompression technique performed on a specialized table. Particularly effective for disc herniations, sciatica, and lumbar stenosis.

There is no single technique that works best for every patient. Dr. Carlo explains his approach and answers your questions before any treatment begins. Learn more about chiropractic adjustments and what to expect at your first visit.

What to Expect During Your Care Plan

  1. Visit 1: Full health history review, orthopedic and neurological examination, discussion of findings, and a care plan recommendation. Treatment may begin at this visit if appropriate.
  2. Weeks 1 to 3: Most patients come in 2 to 3 times per week. The goal is to reduce inflammation, restore joint motion, and begin correcting the underlying mechanical problem.
  3. Weeks 4 to 8: Visit frequency typically decreases to once or twice per week as the condition stabilizes. Rehabilitation exercises are introduced to reinforce the improvement.
  4. Maintenance: Once the condition is resolved, many patients continue with monthly or bi-monthly visits to maintain spinal health and prevent recurrence, particularly for commuters and desk workers with ongoing postural demands.

What Our Patients Are Saying

Frequently Asked Questions

How close is the office to the Wheaton Metra station?

Our office at 400 W Liberty Dr is about 3 minutes by car from the Wheaton Metra station. You can also reach us by a short walk from the downtown area. Free parking is available at our office for those driving in.

How many visits will I need?

Visit count depends on your condition, how long it has been present, and how your body responds to care. For acute back or neck pain, many patients see significant improvement within 6 to 8 visits over two to three weeks. Chronic conditions that have been building for months typically require 12 to 20 visits over 8 to 12 weeks. Dr. Carlo gives every patient a specific estimate after the first examination and re-evaluates your progress regularly so the plan adjusts as you improve.

What techniques does Dr. Carlo use?

Dr. Carlo is trained in several adjustment techniques, including the Diversified method (a precise, hands-on manual adjustment) and flexion-distraction (a gentle decompression technique for disc and sciatica cases). He selects the technique based on your specific condition, your health history, and what you are comfortable with. He will explain his recommendation before any treatment begins.

Can chiropractic care help with commuter-related neck and back pain?

Yes. Prolonged sitting, whether on the train or at a desk, places the lumbar spine into sustained flexion, which compresses the posterior disc and strains the spinal ligaments over time. Dr. Carlo regularly treats commuters who develop chronic neck and back pain from this type of daily repetitive stress. Adjustments correct the joint dysfunction that builds from that sustained loading. Paired with targeted postural exercises and ergonomic guidance, most commuter patients see meaningful and lasting improvement.

What conditions does Dr. Carlo treat?

Dr. Carlo treats back and neck pain, cervicogenic headaches, sciatica, disc herniations, joint pain, arthritis, sports injuries, auto accident injuries, and more. He also provides massage therapy and physical rehabilitation at the same location. See the full list at centraldupagechiro.com/services.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor in Illinois?

No referral is needed. You can call our office directly at (630) 665-7266 or book an appointment online. Illinois law allows patients to see a chiropractor without a physician referral. If Dr. Carlo determines that your condition requires evaluation by another specialist, he will tell you and help coordinate the right referral.
