Winfield Mounds Forest Preserve is one of the most unusual natural areas in DuPage County. It holds a series of prehistoric Native American burial mounds from the Woodland Period, dating roughly from 100 BC to 1200 AD. The preserve sits along the West Branch DuPage River in southern Winfield and has a quiet one-mile trail that draws regular walkers from the surrounding neighborhoods.
Our office at 400 W Liberty Dr in Wheaton is about ten minutes northeast of the Winfield Mounds area. Dr. Carlo has been treating patients from the southern Winfield neighborhoods since 2005. Whether you walk the preserve trail regularly, maintain a home in this part of the village, or commute from the Winfield Metra station, we are close and ready to help when something starts to hurt.

The southern part of Winfield near the Mounds preserve is a quiet, residential area. Homes here sit on established lots with mature trees. Most were built in the mid-to-late 20th century. Homeowners in this part of the village tend to do a lot of their own yard work and home maintenance. That means bending, digging, hauling, and lifting at the end of workdays when the body is already tired.
The Winfield Mounds trail is short, about a mile, but the terrain runs along the river with some gentle variation underfoot. People who walk it frequently, sometimes twice a day, build up repetitive loading through the hips and lower back. A small misalignment that starts as tightness can become real pain if it is not addressed.
The Winfield Metra station is a short drive from this part of the village. Many residents here commute by train, which adds the familiar cervical strain of sitting with a tilted neck for 30 to 60 minutes each way. The combination of sedentary commuting and physical home upkeep is a common setup for lower back and neck problems.
What brings Winfield Mounds area residents through our door most often?
People in this part of Winfield tend to be steady and understated. They wait longer than they should before making an appointment. A short evaluation often reveals that a problem they thought was just aging is actually a fixable mechanical issue.
Yard work is hard on the spine. Repetitive bending while gardening or raking loads the lumbar joints asymmetrically. Lifting bags of mulch or moving equipment without proper mechanics compounds that load. Over time, these activities shift spinal segments out of position in ways that accumulate quietly until the back gives out during something mundane.
Walking the Mounds trail is lower impact but the repetitive pattern still matters. When the sacroiliac joint or a lumbar segment is restricted, hip pain on the trail side is a predictable result. Research from the American College of Physicians identifies spinal manipulation as a recommended first-line treatment for acute and chronic low back pain, before medication or surgery.1
Most patients with activity-related or work-related back pain see meaningful improvement within 4 to 6 visits. Conditions that have been building for months typically take 8 to 12 weeks to fully resolve. Dr. Carlo gives you a realistic picture of your timeline after the first exam.

A chiropractic adjustment restores proper movement to a spinal joint that has shifted out of position. When a joint stops moving correctly, it puts pressure on the surrounding nerves and discs. Correcting the joint removes that pressure and allows the body to begin healing the tissue around it.
Dr. Carlo uses two primary adjustment techniques and selects the one that fits your condition and comfort level:

Yes. Hip pain from regular walking usually comes from a sacroiliac joint or lumbar restriction, not a problem with the hip itself. The Mounds trail is about a mile, but repeating it several times a week is enough to expose a pattern that your body has been working around. Dr. Carlo evaluates the full picture, including the pelvis and lower spine, to find what is actually driving the pain.
Winfield Mounds contains a group of prehistoric Native American burial mounds built during the Woodland Period, approximately 100 BC to 1200 AD. It sits along the West Branch DuPage River in southern Winfield and includes about a mile of trail. It is one of the few places in the Chicago area where prehistoric mound sites are accessible to the public and preserved by the DuPage County Forest Preserve District. It is a genuinely rare piece of local history.
It depends on your condition, how long it has been present, and how your body responds to care. Acute pain from a specific activity often improves significantly within 6 to 8 visits over two to three weeks. Chronic conditions that have been building for months typically require 12 to 20 visits over 8 to 12 weeks. Dr. Carlo gives every patient a specific estimate after the first examination and adjusts the plan as you improve.
No referral is needed. Call us at (630) 665-7266 or book online at any time. Illinois allows patients to see a chiropractor directly without a physician referral. If Dr. Carlo finds something during your examination that needs evaluation by another specialist, he will let you know and help coordinate the right referral.
