The High Lake area sits in the northern part of Winfield, near the border with Carol Stream. It is a residential pocket of the village with a mix of families and commuters who chose Winfield for its quiet streets and good access to both the Metra and the major roads heading into Chicago or into the western suburbs. It is not flashy. It is practical. And the people who live here tend to be busy.
Our office at 400 W Liberty Dr in Wheaton is about ten minutes southeast of the High Lake area. Dr. Carlo has been treating patients from across Winfield since 2005. Chronic neck pain from commuting, back pain that builds slowly through a long work week, and the kind of stiffness that does not fully loosen up with rest are common among the patients we see from this part of town.

North Winfield residents often have longer commutes than residents closer to the village center. Getting to the Winfield Metra station, connecting to I-355, or heading east toward the employment corridors near Lisle and Naperville adds driving time on top of whatever sit-at-a-desk work the day holds. That adds up. The cervical spine is not designed for hours of forward head posture every day.
Families in the High Lake area with school-age kids know the drill of youth sports seasons. Travel baseball, soccer, and basketball fill weekends from spring through fall. Parents spend hours in folding chairs. Kids spend hours in cars and on fields. Both groups end up in our office at some point, often with different complaints that trace back to the same root cause: the spine was not moving right and nobody noticed until it hurt.
Home ownership in this part of Winfield means the usual seasonal demands: shoveling in winter, yard work in spring and fall, and the kind of lifting and moving that always seems to happen on a Saturday morning. These are not extreme activities. They just land on a spine that has been sitting all week.
What brings High Lake area residents through our door most often?
People in this neighborhood tend to be pragmatic. They want to know what is wrong and how long it will take to fix it. Dr. Carlo gives direct answers after a thorough first exam.
Chronic neck pain from commuting is one of the most predictable patterns we see. A forward head posture adds significant load to the cervical spine with every inch the head moves forward from center. Over weeks and months of commuting, the joints in the neck lose their normal range of motion. The muscles around them tighten to compensate. The result is aching, stiffness, and often headaches that start at the base of the skull.
Lower back pain that builds through the work week and flares on weekends follows a related pattern. Sustained sitting loads the lumbar discs and gradually restricts lumbar joint motion. By Friday, the spine is already compressed. Saturday yard work or a weekend sports game becomes the trigger, not the cause.
Research from the American College of Physicians identifies spinal manipulation as a recommended first-line treatment for acute and chronic low back pain, before medication or surgery.1 For commuters and desk workers, that means effective care without adding medications to an already full schedule.

A chiropractic adjustment restores proper movement to a spinal joint that has shifted out of position. When a joint stops moving correctly, it puts pressure on the surrounding nerves and discs. Correcting the joint removes that pressure and allows the body to begin healing the tissue around it.
Dr. Carlo uses two primary adjustment techniques and selects the one that fits your condition and comfort level:

For commuter neck pain, chiropractic care has a strong track record. The mechanism is well understood: sustained forward head posture during driving or train rides compresses the cervical joints and tightens the muscles around them. Over months, those joints lose normal motion and the pain becomes constant. Adjustments restore the motion and relieve the compression. Most patients with chronic commuter neck pain see real improvement within 6 to 10 visits, though Dr. Carlo gives you a more specific estimate after the first exam.
The High Lake area itself is a residential neighborhood with good sidewalks suited for walking. For trail running, the West Branch DuPage River trail system and the Riverwalk area to the south are accessible in a short drive or walk. West DuPage Woods Forest Preserve is a few minutes west and has more dedicated trail options including wooded paths along the river. Many residents in north Winfield use the local streets for daily walks and then head to the preserves for longer runs on weekends.
It depends on your condition, how long it has been present, and how your body responds to care. Acute pain from a specific activity often improves significantly within 6 to 8 visits over two to three weeks. Chronic conditions that have been building for months typically require 12 to 20 visits over 8 to 12 weeks. Dr. Carlo gives every patient a specific estimate after the first examination and adjusts the plan as you improve.
No referral is needed. Call us at (630) 665-7266 or book online at any time. Illinois allows patients to see a chiropractor directly without a physician referral. If Dr. Carlo finds something during your examination that needs evaluation by another specialist, he will let you know and help coordinate the right referral.
